Finally Updated

After a long period of editing and re-writing, a process that probably took most of a year, Blue Rose is finished.  The version you see here, apart from any remaining tweaks for grammar, is the final version.
Most of the changes between the version that I posted here last year and the current version are in writing style and grammar, as I tried very hard to tighten up the prose.  This story was originally in script format, so it took some doing to convert it.
There are some substantive changes from the earlier draft, namely Chapter 12 had one section edited and another completely re-written, to provide a more personal and meaningful climax.
I have learned a lot from the process, and not just about writing.  After reviewing everything here, I truly do have to say I have put in my heart and soul into this piece of work  It's about EVA, but  not just about EVA. The story has a lot to say about those of us who often find ourselves adrift on the seas of life, and how we find our way to shore.
If you're a fan of Evangelion, please give this story a try: I think you'll find it quite a bit different from the usual FanFics that abound.  I assure you your patience will be rewarded. If you read Boyfriend of Steel last year, please also give Blue Rose a read, as there are many, many changes between those version.  And as always, any feedback from readers is highly appreciated.

Evangelion 2.0 You Will (Not) Advance has a firm release date of June 27th, 2009, nearly two years after 1.0 was released.  Let's hope that this release is at least as good as 1.0.

Evangelion 1.0 U.S. License

Funamation finally licensed the first EVA film for the US market, with an expected release date of October of 2009.  It wasn't a surprise that ADV, the distributor of the original TV series, didn't get the license, as they've fallen into hard times.

They've released almost no details regarding the release, so it's hard to know if their plan is just to bring it to video here, or if they're contemplating something larger, such as a limited-run wide screen release.  Also, no word on dubbing cast, etc.  Suppose we'll know in a few months what their plan is.  Also, I would expect we might see a preview of a dub version at AX in July.  Not that I watch dubs or anything.

The Blue Rose

After a considerable amount of effort, the re-write of BFOS is finished.  The story has been re-titled The Blue Rose, for reasons that will become obvious once you read the story.

This was a significant re-working on the story.  While the basic plot remains the same as the original, I added many scenes, and worked in more background to all of the American characters to enhance the story, as well as lay a foundation for more work down the road.  All in all, the story expanded by two whole chapters, and probably 25% more text in general, plus nearly everything was revisited or re-written to some degree.

The version posted here is "next to final," meaning that have a couple of others who are editing and giving me detailed comments on the re-write.  Once I receive that feedback, and feedback from the rest of the readers, I'll make whatever edits are required and then post a final version to the various Fan Fic sites, as well as re-post it here.

If you've read Boyfriend of Steel already, I do encourage you to read The Blue Rose, as there's a lot more story added. Please drop me a line with any comments, critiques, etc., as its always appreciated.

The following is a poem written by Megumi Hayashibara regarding her character in EVA, Rei Ayanami.  This was written during the making of the series, but more recently came to light.  If I can further source this, I'll update the post, but for now I thought it was worth including.

The me within myself
The you within myself
Wanting to know, not wanting to know
The me further within myself
Wanting to meet, not wanting to meet
What is it that limits meeting the me further within myself
I'm still weak
You're weak as well
The weakness of the me within myself
The me who's always running away
This isn't me

When I came to accept that part of myself
Others seemed to accept that part of myself as well, possibly

Man, mother, other things, sex,
Man's peculiar benefit in being man
The reason for innocence
Is to gain benefit from knowing
I will protect you
Yet it's not for your benefit
It's for mine...

I guess when she gets into character, she really gets into character.

Expect a major update to the site within the next month, pending an edit on the story revision.

Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance

Chara (Hideki Anno's studio) has announced the title for the second EVA movie, and announced an "early summer" (June?) 2009 release date.  There's also a new poster.

They're really good about keeping us clueless on this, but Chara keeps telling us that there's a "new" story, not to mention the mysterious girl in the trailer (who's identified in the most recent DS EVA game as "Marie").  I just hope that they don't jump the shark with this!

It's been a while since I've posted. At work I've had one of the busiest months ever, mostly as several customers converged at once and all placed orders.  This is good, at least we'll have a good Christmas this year.

Of course, as a result, the re-write has been slowed down a bit, but it's still ongoing.  I figure I'm about 75% done with it, and then it goes to Haru for editing.  I've added several new scenes as I expected, as well as expanded significantly on Patrick's backstory.  Hopefully I'll have a completely worthy work by Thanksgiving, enough to re-submit to EFO.

Work will likely take up more time, as we are starting both a side chemical business, and working to expand our company's reach into direct retail sales (something we've been reluctant to do until now). I haven't given up on writing, but it do have to pace it a bit.

The current plan is, after BFOS is finished (again, around Thanksgiving now), to work on the following

1) A set of three short stories (and I mean around 1 to 3 chapters in length, no epics), each centered on one of the pilots (Rei, Asuka, & Shinji).  The stories are all set in the original NGE universe, no AU or crossovers.  Also, they won't link to BFOS directly (though they don't disrupt the continuity either).  These are all dramas, or comedy-drama-type stories, mostly.

2) Evangelion: Alpha & Omega: this is the epic.  If BFOS's rewrite is well-received, then we will continue with the story we begain there.  As I've mentioned in earlier postings, one story is the "redirect" and partly takes place during End of Evangelion, the second story is a true sequel.  Patrick Forrestal's character is central to both stories, so obviously if BFOS is not well received then it's time to reconsider the plot.

In any case, hopefully I'll have all three short stories done by spring '09, and then an outline for A&O sometime after that.  And then, a lot will depend on available time and interest.

If there's not a lot of time for an epic (which with work commitments I fear is likely), I did work out a contingency story that works as firm conclusion to BFOS, sort of a "double epilogue" that condenses a lot of what I wanted to do in A&O.  At least, some way to work out the "what if" that the story posits.

In any case, if anyone's bothering to read this, please check back by the end of November - I should have the new version posted by then.

Work in Progress

Life and work have been keeping me busy for this month, so no updates to the site since the last blog post.  Just to keep up with events:

1) There's a major story revision underway, with about six new or expanded scenes, nearly all of which are backstory for Patrick and Vance.  There's also a style revision for the dialogue, which many didn't like how it was handled, especially in the earlier chapters.  The plan was to finish by Oct 1, but because that's Wednesday, it's unlikely I'll even have the draft revision finished until Oct 3 or later.  I'm looking at posting new text up by the middle of October.

2) Supposedly I've contracted for original fanart for the story, and I'm supposed to see the first two images by the end of the month, but that hasn't happened yet either.  Hopefully I'll have something by next month there too.

3) What's next?  I've decided on the next two stories, one of which is set in End of Evangelion, and other set as a true sequel.  The first of these is in outline form, and won't be fleshed out for a rough draft until the end of the year, with a final publishing date of Summer 2009.  I give myself that much time as it will be about double the length of BFOS.  However, I've made it the goal to at least start work on Story #2, and outline Story #3 by this year.

4) Finally, I had a bit of a "Shinji" moment, which I'm going to detail in another post, but suffice to say emotionally I went a little too far down the deep end of the pool last week.  I want to share it with readers here, so everyone can know sort of where I'm coming from with the writing, and why EVA is so important to me, but suffice to say it was more than a bit frightening.  I take solace in that Hideki Anno had a similar issue, and somehow resolved it.  More on this later.

Evangelion 2.0

It's been over one year since Rebuild of EVA 1.0 premiered on the wide screen in Japan.  For an anime film, it did quite well both critically and at the box office, and when it was released on DVD in April, it became one of the top-selling DVDs in Japan.  It's been shown a few times at cons here in the states, but as of now there is still no official US license for the film.  ADV Films, the ones that brought EVA to the 'States, are now in dire financial straits, and no one else has made any type of announcement regarding interest in licensing, thought there's been scuttlebut about either Bandai or Sony (?!) getting the US DVD rights.

The other big question on fan's minds, both here and in Japan, is the release date for the next film, Rebuild 2.0.  Chara, Hideki Anno's production company, has remained very silent about a release date, and it's not clear if the delay is due to production issues, funding (unlikely, given the financial success of the film), or due to Yuko Miyamura's (Asuka's voice actress) recent medical trouble with Graves' Disease.

Normally in Japan, anime is voice cast in ensemble form, where the whole cast is in the recording booth and records the audio together, where here in the US, each individual actor records separately, and usually not in conjunction with the others.  Also, Anno, taking a cue from his live action experience, actually records his cast before the animation is done, and then draws around the performance, the exact opposite of most of the anime industry. So if Ms. Miyamura has been unavailable, it would appear to gum things up a bit.  I have no doubt we'll see 2.0, but probably not until Spring of 2009.

About EvaFics: after submitting the story, I got back negative input from their editors - apparently they weren't at all happy with the dialog style, and some other problems.  Given that I want the biggest readership for this thing, I'm happy to oblige them, so I am in the midst of another re-write and edit, mostly to "dress up" the dialog, much of which currently has a "script" style that reads more like a screenplay than a story.

Things in my office are hectic, slow economy, etc, but hopefully I'll have all of the story changes made by the end of September, if not before, and then the story will have new exposure on what's probably the most read of the English-language EVA fan fiction sites that's out there.

The changes will also include two new segments that fill in more backstory on the American pilots, which I think is needed and goes to answering some reader questions, as well as providing that "epic" feeling.  Once this is complete and accepted on the other sites, I'll post the edited version here.

Also, I've made the decision that there will be another story, set with the same characters and continuing the scenario that was laid out in BFOS.   The plot is still being determined, but it will roughly start when Kaji is shot, and mostly take place during the events portrayed in End of Evangelion.  Yes, there will be a new ending in this FF.  And Yes, Patrick Forrestal and EVA-04 will be back.
