Blue Rose #2

Posted by godaironin on August 9, 2010 at 12:31 PM Comments comments (0)

Today is my birthday and it was supposed to be the day Blue Rose #2 rolled out. However Haru is still working on edits and it's twice as long as Blue Rose #1, so this is still taking a while. I'll be happy if I can get it out there by September.

Got some good response when story #1 was re-edited and reposted on FFN, and hopefully that will progress to a good response on story #2. I will roll the story out in stages, chapter by chapter, on FFN and Darkscribes, as well as on this site.

Also have more fan art on the way, probably two more pics, within the month.

Chapter 1 Revision

I've done a rewrite of Chapter 1, mostly to smooth it out. Chapter 1 was the very first thing I wrote for the story, and the original version reflected me at my earlier skill level. I was never really happy with it and felt it needed some serious tweaking, especially after seeing some readers drop off the story at FFN.  As a result of the changes I think it flows better, and the character's actions make a bit more sense.  Anyway, it's up on the site and I'll start modifying the story whereever else its posted.

A couple of other notes, one is that there could be some more commission art for the story coming this Fall. Will post when that's more complete. The other is that the final beta read of Story #2 is finally in progress so we could see this online in September. Later than I planned but that's fine.

Beta Reading and Name Changes

Posted by godaironin on June 6, 2010 at 3:32 PM Comments comments (0)

Currently the second story is in beta reading phase, with one reader complete and two ongoing. I anticipate receiving all of the beta feedback by end of June and then will work on the final edits in July, with a target publish date of August 9.  Like with the last story, I will roll it out chapter by chapter on the major fanfiction sites like FFO and Darkscribes.

There are two major hurdles to overcome still at this stage. One is the name. I named this story Redemption several months ago but when going to Darkscribes recently I saw another EVA story named "Redemption" and know that will cause a conflict. Therefore I'm searching for a new title.  This is not an unsurmountable obstacle as the first story's title came after two previous name changes.

The second hurdle is a decision to either roll the story as a proper sequel, or append it to the original as a "Part II."  The main reason for doing so is to ensure that there's context to newer readers, as if you haven't read Blue Rose you're not going to know what the hell is going on.

Also once the final draft is prepared I will begin to revise the website to post the second story. I anticipate that at least on this site the stories will be distincly different entities, which is the way I'd prefer it.

At some point I'm going to go and do an essay on EVA and why I write these things. I may do that as part of the "Writer's Notes" on Part II.  I actually had done a lot of thinking on that issue in general so I'd expect to run that out this Summer after the final draft. Once I have feedback on the story from the major sites then I'll outline and start work on story #3.

Redemption Rough Draft complete

Posted by godaironin on May 21, 2010 at 4:07 PM Comments comments (0)

As of yesterday the rough draft of Redemption, the Blue Rose sequel, is completed. The text-only version finally clocked in at 200 pages, with 100,000 words. That's about 60% larger than Blue Rose. The rough is now sent to the beta readers for their work and hopefully I'll be working on a final draft by next month, and still on schedule to finish completely by July.

Compared to Blue Rose the new story is much more epic in scale, as it takes place during the events of End of Evangelion (and you don't get more epic than that!). While there have been innumberable sequels to EVA, there have been only a few to take on EoE in a major way, and this story will follow the major players plus a new group that's being introduced that has it out for both NERV and SEELE. My goal was to give EoE a very different ending and I do believe that's happened!

Hopefully I will have a finished version by July and then I will alter the website to allow access to both stories. There are still plans for a third and final story, but one thing at a time!

The Story Continues

Currently I'm working on a sequel to Blue Rose, named Redemption.  Originally i wrote the story that became Blue Rose as a one-shot. However I thought writing a sequel to it would present a very interesting challenge and after a lot of effort managed to work up what I think is a good story that continues from the situations presented in Blue Rose and carries them through to End of Evangelion.

While I don't want to give a whole lot away, I can say for certain that a certain American EVA pilot will be back. He won't be alone either, as he'll be joined by another familiar face to EVA fans of late...

Currently the outline is complete and I'm working on story, with a goal of having a Beta ready by March of 2010 and the final done by July.  Will keep posting as things progress..

EVA 1.01 USA release

Funamation will release Rebuild of Evangelion 1.01 in the USA on DVD in early November, with a Blu-Ray release (1.11) in the Spring. No word on if Funamation's gone ahead and purchased the rights to EVA 2.0.

Another new image

If you go to Writer's Notes, there's another new image that goes along with the story, something that shows a possible future. I won't post it here but you can link there and scroll to the bottom.  Enjoy!

Page Revisions

Today finally marks the day that I have completely finished Blue Rose.  On this page I have posted the final cleaned up and grammar corrected version of the story in its final form (there was one scene tweak in Chapter 2, otherwise the story itself is intact).

If you've been here before you might also notice that there are new images on the site, including this new front cover image:
That image is an original artwork made just for this story. There is another commission or two coming in soon, and I will be sure to link the artist once that's in.

I'll post this story also on the revamped EVAFICS.ORG site and also re-post on FFN.

I have to say I'm really happy.  This was a long time in coming and the story grew a bit from my original intention of a script from three years ago. Once I can get everything prepared I can not wait to start working on the next one.

Oh, and of course, today just so happens to be my birthday as well, so that's a neat coincidence.

Evangelion 1.+++

This weekend Anime Expo will debut the Evangelion 1.0 English dub, done by Funimation.  This is a preview: the actual movie becomes available in November on DVD (no word on BluRay).

It took nearly two years to get EVA to an official US release, which is really a tragedy considering how good the film is.  I'm sure part of the delay is that ADV Films probably had the initial rights, but couldn't fork up the licensing fee.  That put EVA in limbo until another bidder, such as Funimation or Bandai USA could pay what is no doubt a huge license for the film.

Fortunately, the Hong Kong subtitle copy is quite good, and I got my copy months ago.  This is very suggested way of getting this kind of media if you have a DVD player that can take Region 3 discs. Of course, not everyone has one of these....

Evangelion 2.0

The second Rebuild of EVA movie: 2.0, or You Can (Not) Advance, came out in Japan on June 27th to very good reviews.  I read several of them, along with one viewer's detailed synopsis, and the conclusion of most of them was that the film not only honors the original EVA but takes it in an entirely different (and very unpredictable) direction.  EVA fans who were worried about the new character Mary Illustrious detracting from the plot shouldn't: apparently she fits in quite well, and in fact many fans really liked her after seeing the film.

I hope that it doesn't take forever and a day to get 2.0 in English, like with 1.0.  Hopefully the Hong Kong DVD will be available within a few months and then I'll get to see it in all it's glory.
